Hanging By A Thread
In the shallows, bulrushes frequent making the perfect hunting ground for a hungry frog. It sits patiently waiting until finally, an insect futters close enough for the taking. Underestimating the distance the frog misses and quickly find himself dangling for the bulrush, sending its seeds into the sky. Cling on, the frog catches sight of the insect again, he flicks his tongue out, stretching as far as he can, in this last desperate attempt.
A number of techniques and mediums were used in the creation of this piece. The background is fabric painted and the frog, insect and bulrush were achieved through quilting, appliqué, painting, sheer work and both machine, hand embroidery. These techniques create the different textures from the soft seeds of the rush to the delicate wings of the insect. Unfortunately, the three-dimensional relief doesn't show particularly well in the photos, so please take a look at the depth of the piece to get an idea of the overall effect.
