Skywards

I often find myself glaring up (as I'm sure many of you do) into the skies in the summer months. Watching the swallows dart and flick around catching flies and making their distinctive chittering chorus. Here I have captured a singular swallow darting up through the clear blue sky. At full speed, it feels the strength of the warm air passing over as it chases towards a group of flies.
A number of techniques and mediums were used in the creation of this piece. The background is fabric painted and the Swallows andf lies were achieved through quilting, appliqué, painting, cording and embroidery. These techniques create the different textures from the soft feathers of the young Swallows to delicated flies. Unfortunately, the three-dimensional relief doesn't show particularly well in the photos, so please take a look at the depth of the piece to get an idea of the overall effect.
