Nibbles

This little Bank Vole is often seen near the potting shed in early Autumn. Its dry protection makes it the perfect place to store his hazelnuts and hide amongst the pots. Here, sheltering in a terracotta pot he nibbles his way through one particularly tasty nut. Cushioned by the moss beneath him he takes his time enjoying every mouthful.

A number of techniques and mediums were used in the creation of this piece. The background is fabric painted and the vole, flower, moss, pot and nuts were achieved through quilting, applique, embroidery, techniques. These techniques create the different textures from the warm fur to the shell of the nuts. Unfortunately, the three-dimensional relief doesn't show particularly well in the photos, so please take a look at the depth of the piece to get an idea of the overall effect.
