Nestled in an ancient elm tree three young barn owls snuggle in for a day of sleep. Above a parent watches over them, tired from the night's activity it yawns wantingly for sleep. Though these three mischievous youngsters won't settle down.
A number of techniques and mediums were used in the creation of this piece. The background is fabric painted, the owls and tree were achieved through quilting, appliqué, painting, cording and embroidery. These techniques create the different textures from the soft warm feathers of the birds to the knobbly tree. Unfortunately, the three-dimensional relief doesn't show particularly well in the photos, so please take a look at the depth of the piece to get an idea of the overall effect.
