The Lookout Post
Whether it be in ancient woodland, hedgerows, moorland or in the garden Foxgloves blossom. Their tall spikes grow high above the grass and bring architectural glory to any spot. They droop, curl and bend their way to the light. They are truly spectacular, although a little deadly! The Foxglove like most wildflowers is excellent for wildlife giving nectar to bees and moths, but they also make the perfect spot for birds who use their height to catch flies.
A number of techniques and mediums were used in the creation of this piece. The background is fabric painted and the wren, flowers and leaves were achieved through quilting, appliqué, painting and embroidery. These techniques create the different textures from the soft feathers of the wren to the delicate petals. Unfortunately, the three-dimensional relief doesn't show particularly well in the photos, so please take a look at the depth of the piece to get an idea of the overall effect.
