Winter's Forgotten Harvest
Deep in the midst of winter, a red squirrel ventures out into the thick, crunchy snow, when it happens across some pine cones dusted with snow. It sits on its's back legs and feasts on winter's forgotten harvest, when suddenly he hears a noise in front. Startled, he pokes his head around the pine branch to see if other squirrels have found his hidden treasures.
A number of techniques and mediums were used in the creation of this piece. The background is fabric painted, the squirrel, cones, branches, leaves and snow were achieved through quilting, embroidery and three-dimensional techniques. These techniques create the different textures from the hard shell of the pine cones dusted with crisp white snow to the long soft fur of the squirrel with its bristly tail. Unfortunately, the three-dimensional relief doesn't show particularly well in the photos, so please take a look at the depth of the piece to get an idea of the overall effect.
